Going the Distance: Gaynor’s Cross Country Team

Gaynor’s cross country program is only in its second year, but the team is hitting their stride. “Cross Country is the perfect mix of a team sport and an individual sport,” says coach Rebecca Felt. “On a team level, meets are scored by adding up the top 5 places from each team.  In that way it is a team sport.  However, everyone is competing with themselves for individual times and places.  This takes some of the pressure of traditional team sports off and allows kids to focus on having fun and being part of the community.”
The Gaynor team runs in the Independent Schools League, and their first race of the season took place at Van Cortlandt Park in a 1.5 mile race. Gaynor students Blaise and Alexa came in 19th and 27th places, respectively, admirable starts for their first race among approximately 180 and 130 other runners.

Gaynor students were also excited to run into Gaynor alumni, who are now competing on York Prep and LREI’s cross country teams. The students were on Gaynor’s cross country team last year and were able to talk to students about their experiences both on and off the track.
