Bringing an Ancient Artform to Life in the Orange Cluster

Orange Cluster students tried their hand at ancient Chinese pottery in Art Teacher Sophia Saad’s class as part of a cross-curricular project.

The students studied China in their homeroom classes as part of their World Culture curriculum. During their lessons, students learned that the Chinese invented porcelain by mixing kaolin clay and coal dust. Students were able to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art to study the historical porcelain vases and dishes that are on display.

Ms. Saad added a multisensory component to the study, helping students bring the process they learned about to life.

“Students made porcelain plates by working and molding clay that was fired in the kiln,” Ms. Saad said. “They completed the project by painting and designing their plates to reflect original Chinese designs of landforms and bodies of water or learned information that is unique to Chinese culture and history.”
