Celebrating the Performing Arts with Something Extra

Stephen Gaynor School recognizes the importance of performing arts education for our students, and for the past three years students have attended special Performing Arts Assemblies in the spring. This year’s assembly, held on March 13, was the very first to be held in the new Performing Arts Center.
Students were wowed by the vocal stylings of Yale’s all-female a cappella group, Something Extra. The group was started in the mid-1970s, and as Ms. Sortino said with a smile, “They have been performing for over 40 years, just not the same group that is here before you today.” The group performed a selection of songs from Lorde’s “Royals” to Elton John’s “Your Song” to a rousing medley of Disney favorites.
At Stephen Gaynor School, students with learning differences develop essential academic and critical thinking skills through individualized and evidence-based approaches, empowering them to reach their full potential. Students learn to advocate for themselves and others while actively building an inclusive community, a sense of belonging, and a belief in their own possibilities.
